How to Rank in ChatGPT — 5 Things That Decide Whether You Get Cited

How to Rank in ChatGPT — 5 Things That Decide Whether You Get Cited

← Part of the full guide: Why AI Doesn’t Recommend Your Brand

TL;DR: There is no ranking in ChatGPT in the Google sense — there is retrieval and there is selection. ChatGPT search leans on Bing’s index to find candidates, then picks the sources that answer cleanly, come from a recognisable entity, and say something the other candidates do not. So the work is: be crawlable, be in Bing, be structured, be mentioned elsewhere, and offer information gain. Your Google rank predicts almost none of this. Start with a free AI visibility scan to see where you stand.

What “ranking in ChatGPT” actually means

ChatGPT does not maintain a ranked list of websites. When a question needs current information, it retrieves candidate pages — largely through Bing’s index — and then a model chooses which sources to use and cite. Your goal is to be in the candidate pool and to be the most useful thing in it.

This has an uncomfortable consequence. A business can hold position one on Google for its main keyword and never once be named by ChatGPT, because the two systems select on different criteria. Treat AI visibility as its own channel with its own diagnostics rather than as a by-product of SEO.

What actually influences whether ChatGPT cites you

1. Crawler access — the precondition

If OAI-SearchBot is blocked in robots.txt, stopped by your CDN, or handed a page whose content only appears after JavaScript runs, nothing else on this list matters. No major AI crawler executes JavaScript as of 2026. This is the first thing to test, and the test takes five minutes — see can ChatGPT see my website.

2. Bing indexation

Because retrieval leans on Bing, being absent from Bing’s index is close to being absent from ChatGPT search. Most teams have never opened Bing Webmaster Tools. Register, submit a sitemap, and check the coverage report for pages crawled but excluded.

3. Answer-first structure

Put a direct 40–60 word answer immediately under each heading. This inverted-pyramid shape lets a model lift a complete answer without rewriting it, which is exactly what it prefers to do. Around 55% of citations come from the top third of a page.

4. Entity clarity and third-party corroboration

Models weight sources they can identify and cross-check. That means consistent business details everywhere you appear, Organization schema on your site, and — more importantly — accurate mentions on sites you do not own. Brands are cited through third-party sources at roughly 6.5 times the rate of their own site, so directories, industry lists, reviews and press carry real weight.

5. Information gain

If your page repeats what the other candidates already say, there is no reason to cite it. Original data, a named practitioner’s experience, a real price, a documented failure — anything the model cannot assemble from the rest of the pool — is what earns the mention. This is the hardest item on the list and the one competitors cannot copy.

Google SEO vs ChatGPT visibility

Google SEO ChatGPT visibility
Index it draws on Google’s own Largely Bing’s
JavaScript rendering Yes — headless Chrome No — raw HTML only
What wins Relevance, links, page experience Extractability, entity clarity, information gain
Result you want A position in a list Your name inside a sentence
Reporting Search Console, daily Repeated prompt testing — no native dashboard

How to start — a realistic first month

Step 1 — Clear the technical blockers (week 1)

  • Fetch your top pages with curl -A "OAI-SearchBot" and confirm your actual copy is in the response.
  • Remove any AI-crawler disallow rules you do not intend, and check your CDN is not returning 403 to bots.
  • Register in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap.

Step 2 — Restructure your ten most commercial pages (weeks 2–3)

  • Rewrite each H2 as a question, with a 40–60 word self-contained answer beneath it.
  • Add one verifiable, sourced fact per section, and Organization plus FAQPage schema that matches the visible text.
  • State prices, timelines and specifics in plain numbers wherever you legitimately can.

Step 3 — Build corroboration off-site (week 4 onward)

  • Correct your details in the directories and industry lists that already mention you.
  • Get into the comparison articles and roundups people in your category actually read.
  • Publish at least one thing containing data nobody else has.

Caution: Do not measure this by asking ChatGPT about yourself once and celebrating a good answer. Responses vary between sessions, accounts and regions, and a logged-in chat carries memory of your earlier messages. Test in a fresh session, run each question several times, and record how often you appear rather than whether you appeared.

How to prioritise if you can only do one thing

1. If you have never checked crawler access — start there

It is the cheapest possible test and the most common single point of failure. Everything else is wasted spend until it passes.

2. If access is fine but you are invisible — look at structure

Pages written as continuous prose with the answer at the end are the second most common cause. Rewriting the top of each section is a day of work with no engineering dependency.

3. If structure is fine but competitors still win — look off-site

At that point the gap is usually corroboration. You need to exist in the sources the model trusts to describe your category, not only on your own domain.

4. If you are on a hosted platform, find the ceiling first

Some site builders limit how much structured data and raw HTML you control. Knowing your platform’s realistic ceiling before you commit a content budget prevents paying for work the platform will not let you implement.

Frequently asked questions

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?

There is no paid placement inside ChatGPT’s organic answers. Anyone offering guaranteed ChatGPT rankings is selling something that does not exist as a product. What you can buy is the work — crawlability, structure, schema and off-site corroboration.

Does ranking well on Google mean ChatGPT will recommend me?

No. The two select on different criteria and ChatGPT retrieves largely through Bing rather than Google. It is common for a page-one Google result to be absent from every ChatGPT answer in its category.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?

Technical fixes can register within weeks once pages are recrawled. Entity and corroboration work takes months, because it depends on other sites publishing accurate information about you. Expect a quarter before the pattern is clear.

Do I need to be in Bing to appear in ChatGPT?

For ChatGPT search results it matters a great deal, since retrieval leans on Bing’s index. Registering in Bing Webmaster Tools and submitting a sitemap is one of the highest-value, lowest-effort steps available.

How do I track whether it is working?

Fix a list of buying questions, run them in a fresh session several times each, and record the share of runs where you are named and in what position relative to competitors. A single favourable answer proves nothing — frequency across repeated runs is the metric.
