← Part of the full guide: Why AI Doesn’t Recommend Your Brand
What “checking AI visibility” actually means
It means testing whether AI models name your brand when someone asks a buying question in your category — and if they do, in what position, alongside which competitors, and how consistently across different tools.
Unlike Google rank, there’s no dashboard for this by default. You have to prompt the models yourself, or use a tool built to automate that testing across engines.
Do it yourself — the 15-minute manual check
Step 1 — List your real buying questions (3 minutes)
- Write down 3-5 questions your actual customers would type, e.g. “best [category] in [city]” or “[category] recommendation for [use case]”.
Step 2 — Ask each AI tool (8 minutes)
- Run every question through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude.
- For each answer, record: are you mentioned? At what position? Which competitors appear?
Step 3 — Check your technical foundation (4 minutes)
- View your page source and search for “application/ld+json” — if nothing appears, you have no structured data.
- Check robots.txt at yourdomain.com/robots.txt to confirm AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) aren’t blocked.
Caution: A manual check gives you a snapshot, not a score. It tells you if you’re missing, not why, and it won’t stay current — model behavior shifts month to month.
Manual check vs a structured audit
| Manual check | AIVS Score audit | |
|---|---|---|
| Output | A few observations | A trackable score across 5 dimensions |
| Coverage | 3-5 questions you thought of | Systematic testing across engines and query types |
| Diagnosis | You see the symptom | You see which of 5 dimensions is the cause |
| Competitor view | Whoever you happen to notice | Named competitor comparison |
| Time | 15 minutes, once | 24-hour report, trackable over time |
What the AIVS Score measures
1. Crawlability
Whether AI bots can actually access and read your site — robots.txt rules, sitemap health, and server response.
2. Content understandability
Whether your content is structured clearly enough for a model to extract facts confidently — headings, tables, plain language.
3. AI citation presence
Whether independent sources — reviews, roundups, media — mention you, and how consistently.
4. Technical performance
Site speed, mobile readiness, and other technical signals that affect how reliably AI can process your pages.
5. AI Overview presence
Whether you already appear in AI Overview-style summaries on search engines, an early signal of citation strength.

Frequently asked questions
Can I check AI visibility for free?
Yes — ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude your buying questions manually, or run a free automated scan for a faster, broader check.
What is the AIVS Score?
It’s a score across five dimensions — crawlability, content understandability, AI citation presence, technical performance, and AI Overview presence — that measures how likely AI is to recommend you.
How often should I recheck my AI visibility?
Every 4-8 weeks. Model behavior and retrieval sources shift regularly, so a one-time check goes stale.
Does a low AIVS Score mean my site is bad?
No — it just means specific structural or citation signals are missing. The score points to what to fix, not a judgment on your business.
Can every website reach a perfect score?
Not always. Some CMS platforms cap how much structured data you can add. A proper audit tells you the realistic ceiling for your setup.
